Casual (Season 1)

casual

This is a Hulu original that fits under the category of Comedy/Drama. It is really an interesting show that took me a while into the season to figure out what it was about and  that the title really speaks accurately about it. Being a pretty serious comedy serious I wasn’t sure I was going to like it that much but it held an aspect of psychology that captured my interest until I could finally start getting into it.

The show is about the three people you see in the photo above. There is the divorced mother who has not gotten over her ex husband moving on as fast as he did after the divorce. She is a psychologist/counselor that you will find out while watch has as many issues as a the clients she counsels and will often end up having her family and assistant giving her therapy. The mother has a daughter in the middle of the picture above who she basically lets do what ever she wants because of her psychological mind set. This allows them to have a close relationship witch overall is not that healthy and causes issues later down the road. After the divorce the mother and daughter move into the mothers brother’s house where he openly excepts them in. The mother and her brothers relationship is also very uncomfortably close making the three of them one interesting too casual of a family.

As you will come to figure out what this show is about is Sex! real causal Sex. you can tell when each episode starts the intro shows a list of preferences that one would choose on a dating site. Like looking for a relationship, just dating ext, and the one it lands on is casual. So the brother is only rich because he was a partner in creating this dating site called Snooger where the Brother basically has not contributed to the company since the beginning and now only uses the site to his own benefit of hooking up with what ever women he chooses. He can do this because he is a master at knowing what the perfect online dating profile looks like and what women tend to for when reading a fellows profile.

The sexual relationships between the family and the people they meet really make up the bulk of the entertainment in this show. They all end up treading on top of each others  territory being too non nonchalant with their boundaries and being the victim of bad parents. You get to meet their parents as they to eventually come into the show and you get to see all the destruction they did to their kids and there grandkid.

The show starts out real slow and continues to be slow but it is well made and the progression flows along smoothly as you start to see the different characters and their relationships come to be. Causal sort of reminds me of the show Weeds in being similar to sharing the qualities of having an unstructured family and a similar feel. Its definitely not much of a show to just jump in on on any episode having the since that you will need to watch this one from the begging if you are going to have any clue on what is happening. A lot conspires from episode to episode and this is another reason that this show is just decent enough to watch.

I have high hopes for the second season but am still debating on watching it or not because i believe that there are much better show out there to watch having found many! But it seams to be a popular pick upon Hulu watchers and should deserve the chance to even give the first season a full watch through. Like I said, after the first season I am more incline to continue watching. This show gets a Six out of Ten.

The Mick: Season 1

The mick

Changing it up a bit here folks and expanding my territory. Really the reason Im doing a review over a TV show instead of the usual movie, is because well, I got to far behind on movie reviews. That is I was watching more movies than I was doing reviews and that is bad business. So I decided to take a break from movies and watch The Mick so that I could catch up on my movie reviews. Then it struck me I can also do reviews about TV shows and it won’t kill me either because they take more time to watch. The Idea is brilliant! of course its not original.. So the way I have decided to review shows it by seasons. I feel like that is this most logical way to review a TV show don’t you thing?

The Mick is a comedy starring: Kaitlin Olson as Mackenzie Murphy, AKA Micky, AKA Mick, Sofia Black-D’Elia as Sabrina Pemberton, Carla Jimenez as Alba, Thomas Barbusca as Chip Pemberton, Jack Stanton as Ben Pemberton, and Scott MacArthur as Jimmy. This is a good solid cast if you ask me, with equal play time and importance. Season 1 takes the right amount of time to develop these characters and to blend them into the unit that they become to be.

The Mick is about this very wealthy family that lives in a mansion. The parents get taken into custody for some illegal business that they were doing with their company and make the choice to leave the country. Micky, the mothers sister and kids aunt must take on the responsibility to watch after the house and the children until things get settled and the parents come back to relieve her.

The children start out in this show as proud and stuck up as ever, knowing that they have all the money in the world and can buy there way into what ever they want. Micky comes from a different back ground of being unemployed, poor, and uses street skills to get by. Micky is living it up in this new life style as she takes full advantage of her sisters house and money.

At First she has no idea what she is doing when it comes to taking care of kids, even though they are not all babies the wide age spectrum gives her a full plate to handle. Ben is the youngest of the Pemberton’s being about age 9 and who is going through some gender identity confusion. Next we have Chip being the middle child who is use to acting like a rich powerful man being able to get what ever he wants by throwing enough money its direction. The eldest is Sabrina being a very attractive young lady is as mean and proud as they come.

It is hilarious to watch the two worlds clash with Micky and Jimmy (her long lived boyfriend/buddy) introducing the Pembertons to a new way of living. At first the kids are not to fond of Micky being there and telling them what to do. They refuse to follow her direction which undoubtedly leads to fights and battles between them. Even though she has a rough start not really knowing how to handle these snobs or take care of children at all. She manages to use her manipulation, boldness, and audacity to say and do what ever is needed to get the desired outcome to pull this family together in trusting her to be leader and in helping the children with their problems that their parents neglected to be apart of.

If you have ever seen Melissa and Joey then you have gotten just a small taste of what you would experience from this show. Melissa and Joey is like candy when it comes to The Mick more being like a case of Red Bull. Basically this show is way more intense, which I loved. There is no dumb romance or sad sorrowful drama. No, its just raw real family issues accompanied by fights, teaming up against each other, winning respect, and breaking long engraved traditions.

Kaitlin Olson of course is the star of this show incase, if you didn’t get that her character name is the show title. This show is not all about her but she is the one that holds the show together and I think she does this very well. She brings the same lowlife/trashy comedy style that she had with Its Always Sunny but makes it her own. Then she has Jimmy by her side who also brings that same slob like/ lower-class style of comedy where its just funny to watch how disgraceful they can be. They are more than just that though they really bring a side of family that the Pembertons have never seen before, a loving caring real family life.

The first season was perfect in all aspects. They had the right amount of episodes, a great Pilot ,and season ending. I really can’t wait to watch the second season after it is finished. I say that because I rather benign watch my shows, that way I don’t have to wait a week for each upcoming episode to premier. By the way I think they released the first episode of the second season, just FYI. Also I probably will not give to many ratings on the lower end of the scale when it comes to TV shows just because I am not going to watch a full season if I didn’t like it, you understand. The Mick Season 1 gets a Nine out of Ten.
