The Good Place (Season One)

The Good Place

The Good Place is a NBC premier that I found to watch on Hulu. At first glances seeing the cover you will get the impression of an easy going simple comedy, and that is exactly what it is. The whole Idea behind the show is actually quite clever and you would imagine that being about an after life concept that it would be pretty good. Well let’s just say my expectation were not quite matched to what I had anticipated.

Kristen Bell and Adam Scott are the only two recognizable actors that I noticed in this show. The show was made by the same crew who does Parks and Recreation, hence Adam Scott being apart of this cast. In know way does it come close to comparing to Parks and Rec though, which I had hopes for.

The show lasts typically less than 30 minutes and it is neither a documentary or sitcom. It is a show with a plot that will unfold slowly over the continued seasons. although the acting is not as good as it should be for a show like this with the cast and script doing as good of a job as your basic sitcom.

There are a lot of interesting and surprising things that happen through out most of the episodes that literally could be said to be the main chew of what makes the show survive.   The comedy is week and the potential to where this show will go with the plot it has is scarce. Most of the thrill and suspense has to do with the drama that is played out in the characters trying to find out why the good place is falling apart and how those who know why it is falling apart are going to fix it and keep the reason hidden.

There is much mystery and a thought for this show’s story to branch out to expanded bounds. The introduction of new characters would be a plus as the small circle of main players that are happening right has about met its final existence to what has currently happened. Viewers will be quite curious to see the next season of this show as the possibilities to where it can go form here are endless. Lets just hope that the second season out does the first. This show lands a hard Six out of Ten.

Casual (Season 1)

This is a Hulu original that fits under the category of Comedy/Drama. It is really an interesting show that took me a while into the season to figure out what it was about and  that the title really speaks accurately about it. Being a pretty serious comedy serious I wasn’t sure I was going to like it that much but it held an aspect of psychology that captured my interest until I could finally start getting into it.

The show is about the three people you see in the photo above. There is the divorced mother who has not gotten over her ex husband moving on as fast as he did after the divorce. She is a psychologist/counselor that you will find out while watch has as many issues as a the clients she counsels and will often end up having her family and assistant giving her therapy. The mother has a daughter in the middle of the picture above who she basically lets do what ever she wants because of her psychological mind set. This allows them to have a close relationship witch overall is not that healthy and causes issues later down the road. After the divorce the mother and daughter move into the mothers brother’s house where he openly excepts them in. The mother and her brothers relationship is also very uncomfortably close making the three of them one interesting too casual of a family.

As you will come to figure out what this show is about is Sex! real causal Sex. you can tell when each episode starts the intro shows a list of preferences that one would choose on a dating site. Like looking for a relationship, just dating ext, and the one it lands on is casual. So the brother is only rich because he was a partner in creating this dating site called Snooger where the Brother basically has not contributed to the company since the beginning and now only uses the site to his own benefit of hooking up with what ever women he chooses. He can do this because he is a master at knowing what the perfect online dating profile looks like and what women tend to for when reading a fellows profile.

The sexual relationships between the family and the people they meet really make up the bulk of the entertainment in this show. They all end up treading on top of each others  territory being too non nonchalant with their boundaries and being the victim of bad parents. You get to meet their parents as they to eventually come into the show and you get to see all the destruction they did to their kids and there grandkid.

The show starts out real slow and continues to be slow but it is well made and the progression flows along smoothly as you start to see the different characters and their relationships come to be. Causal sort of reminds me of the show Weeds in being similar to sharing the qualities of having an unstructured family and a similar feel. Its definitely not much of a show to just jump in on on any episode having the since that you will need to watch this one from the begging if you are going to have any clue on what is happening. A lot conspires from episode to episode and this is another reason that this show is just decent enough to watch.

I have high hopes for the second season but am still debating on watching it or not because i believe that there are much better show out there to watch having found many! But it seams to be a popular pick upon Hulu watchers and should deserve the chance to even give the first season a full watch through. Like I said, after the first season I am more incline to continue watching. This show gets a Six out of Ten.

Bread and Butter (2014) Dual Review

M: This film is about a thirty year old virgin red head who is very troubled by her lack of love life.  She is a receptionist at a counseling center.  Her boss is an egotistical nutcase that is concerned for her and especially for another young man who is also a virgin( that being the least important thing he’s dealing with!)  She is a very boring person and really does not have much going on in her life except for constant anxiety.  Ameila has a little crush on the troubled young man named Daniel, as does he have one on her.  Ameila also has a love for books that turns her life upside down.  One of the books she picks up leads her to a very eccentric  man named Leonard.  He’s left messages in the book so he can be found by the reader.  She eventually finds him and they start seeing one another.  He is a troubled atheist who is severely depressed and jobless.  Ameila is drawn by him because she is desparate too lose her virginity in storybook fashion. Daniel and her also progress in their relationship.  Who will she choose?

M: This film is not what its advertised to be at all. Hulu had it in the comedy section, but I did not laugh but a few times.  It’s more like a drama with a few chuckles along the way.  Ameilas character is a little annoying, and not the most likable.  Daniel is the most interesting character to me, and thats not saying much as he is rather dull.  But Leonard is presented as an intriguing character, but he doesn’t come off that way.  Rather, just a sad and disappointing human being.  Ameilas boss is somewhat funny, but annoying as the film continues.  The movie does a decent job on being realistic as far as the dialogue goes.  This is more of an indie film and it definitely has the vibe with its soundtrack.  What the film tries to accomplish, I’m not sure.  I just have one big takeaway.  If you are trying to make a film about filling the void of someones lack of love life, try doing a better job!

P: Ameilas obviously want’s a more fulfilling life for herself as she works at counseling office and has read every self help book there possibly is but she is not really doing a good job at this. She lacks self-esteem and self-worth as you can tell from her lack of using makeup, living at her parents, and being afraid to drive.

P: I don’t know how she ended up getting a boost in her dating life from her boss seeing that he is a major fluke portraying himself as a professional when really he is just a life coach, AKA I have no license to do what I am doing, but he actually can be called the cause of her success. Breaking so many ethical laws he tries to hook up his client with her, his assistant, and encourages to have sex saying that this is a healthy move. He takes it even a step further and at the end allows her to be his therapist.

M:  The only part i liked in this film was the scene where Daniel and Ameila are riding their bikes and run into Leonard unexpectedly.  You could cut the tension with a knife it’s so uncomfortable.  You really feel for her here, and don’t want her relationships to be ruined.  They all end up going out for drinks together and while they are sitting together, the suspense keeps you drawn in.  For me, i was pulling for Daniel to trump Leonard and get the girl.  He chugs his beer once he gets it and it made me laugh so hard!  As the viewer, you finally have something to care about in this film.

P: You get a hint that this Leonard is a real creeper and psychopath once Ameila meets him for the first time. But as the movie goes on you become more sure of your first impression. He weirdly starts to be possessive of Ameila and Ameila likes it. Really the most normal character in this film is Daniel who who is seeking help from the quack self help coach. But maybe Ameila is meant to be with this weird do as she is weird herself being obsessed with Pies and fantasizing about having sex with unknown men and having pies smeared all over her at the same time.

M: As the film draws to conclusion, we see Ameila move on from Leonard and Daniel.  The one success she has in the film is that she finally learns how to drive. Yes, you read that right.  She is terrified of driving, and in the ending scene, we see her driving  and enjoying herself.  So this is the reward the audience gets for enduring this torturous piece of work.  How anticlimactic  can the writers get?  Once the credits started rolling I was so happy that i had not spent my money at a theatre for this. This movie gets a Two out of Ten

P: This Hulu film is just one laugh at rather than laugh with as your realize you have have to tear it apart rather than admire it for entertainment. This movie gets a Five out of  Ten
