Sleepy Hollow (1999)

sleepy hollow

I never read the book for sleepy hollow and waited thus long to watch the 1999 mystery film. I don’t know what sparked my interest in it this late but I felt lead to watch it. It might have been because it was a Johny Depp Film or directed by Tim Burton or because it was in my to watch list on Netflix. No matter trying to figure out the reason, lets just say it was a mystery ;).

Based on the book I would imagine by Washington Erving this movie features a classic seen shot in 1799. in a place not to far from network called sleepy hollow. Johny Depp plays the investigator who knows better than to just glance at recent death that has and unknown cause and say it is an accident. He ready to put to the test modern day science and forensic techniques to the test solve the questionable deaths nobody els will.

Not surprising to the audience but to Johny Depp the Murders in sleepy hollow are more that what he expected let alone dreamed of. The story keeps the watcher unsure if these murders are caused by the physical world or something beyond what the eye can see.

Mixed into the movie you have some witch craft, pretty ladies or lady I might correct my self, Men with Wigs, and the eerie ghostly little town of sleepy hollow. This town I might add I quite enjoyed as it was beautiful yet made you feel like something was going to pop out and get you behind every dark corner.

Johny’s Investigation skills are top notch and quite impressive making the movie just that much more amusing. They also did a great job in not letting the audience figure out to early the mystery behind sleepy hollow. Now what was cheesy and Im going to give this some merry being as old as this movie was was the scary effects. Lets just say man have they came a long way in what they now consider frighting.

This movie is nothing to jump off your bum and go run to the movies about and don’t bother it not in the movies anyways. But give it up for something different will yah.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

lsof

A remake of the 1960s movie. This is a comical musical that turns what could be a horror film into a film filled with fun songs and plenty of laughs and feelings of happiness. Still based in the 1960s of the poor streets of skid row, this movie tells the story of a botinist and a shop assistant trying to find love in one another. Of course there is the alien man eating plant that brings them together. The plant is the other half of what this play is about. With these two factors coming together we get a sweet and fun dynamic for a theater production.

This is one Musical I could not stop myself from singing along with as the songs were so catchy and lively they really contributed to making this film complete in making the watcher have good feelings. The songs where funny and added a richness of color and pizzazz to the overall picture with dashes of raunchiness and sadistic lyrics to match the overall feeling. The sound track even tells the story so well that after you have seen the movie you can listen to the sound track alone and hear the whole story as if you where watching it. I only know this because i have the sound track playing right now as I’m typing this because I though it would be fun and plus I really liked the main song and couldn’t get it out of my head.

The cast is a great pic for this film as it includes Rick Moranis, Ellen Green, Steve Martin, Jim Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest, and Bill Murray. Ellen Green’s voice and her ability to show cleavage make her a hurrah as you watch this tall yet tiny voice of a women, Audrey the shop assistant. Rick Moranis as always plays the perfect nerd/scientist so no doubt he is going to play a great botanist. Steven Martin is the other big hitter and by my opinion plays the best role as he is absolutely hilarious. I would have had to say this is one of his best works. The other special guests stars include Bill Murray, John Candy, and Christopher Guest who have little great one sceners in this film but by far I would have to say that Bill Murray was priceless, real raw Murray.

You will find Steve Martin playing the character of Orin the Dentist and he is one of my favorite parts of the film. An evil dentist at that, that looks and talks like Elvis Precisely met John Travolta from Grease. He loves to inflict pain on his patients as well as treat his girlfriend Audrey unacceptably bad. With out Orin this movie would not be the same.

The set this movie was filmed on and the setup also really impressed me. It gave it a real live theater type feel. The three singing girls also played an important part in making this movie how great it was. The voice of the plant I believe was a great choice as well giving the plant the power it deserved but the joke that you couldn’t take it seriously. The timing of the movie was on point and the story was simple moving along at a steady pace.

There really wasn’t much to the whole thing but there didn’t have to be, the story was about the script and how it was acted upon. One thing that I really did appreciate was how they did not over do it with the musical pieces. This movie had just the right amount of singing and all the words of the songs played perfectly into the detail of the story line. The only thing truly I did not like is that the play couldn’t keep the same level of excitement in the entertainment as it happened to fade out toward the end.

The way they filmed this movie was excellent with many fun and unordinary shots giving it an unique and entertaining style. I give the director (Frank Oz) props for his work and would say it was comparable to Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is a must see for all those who appreciate good movie work and a top on my list for musicals/plays . This movie gets an Eight out of Ten.

It Comes at night

it comes at night 2

Nice job done by the previews in making this look like one scary movie except for all things considered it wasn’t. From the previews you will get an impression of a very scary movie that fits in the category of flesh eating disease and decaying. Where they do a great job is in hiding back what makes this movie scary. And they did it for a great reason too.. To hide that fact that this movie isn’t really scary at all. The best thing that it had going for it in this department was the short lived attempted at suspense. Every time I thought something scary was about to happen it didn’t and just turned out to be a total let down.

So what do we got here. Well its hard to tell for the longest time and even at the end you are still thinking what was this movie truly about anyways. The movie begins by showing the worst of the disease and gets it out of the way making you think this is as worst as it gets or it must get a whole lot worse. Unfortunately this is as bad as it gets.

The whole point of this movie reveals itself slowly as simply don’t catch the disease and this is what the movie focuses on the whole time. The only other variable involved is the other family that they allow to stay with them in their house in the woods. Eventually this becomes the movie. two families living in the same house trying work together but at the same time can’t trust each other. In fact in the condition that they are in they can’t trust anybody.

Resources seem to be scarce and the people that did decided to get out of the city are the few that have not gotten sick. The importance of taking precautions and having rules is made explicit throughout the plot and even making it another core concept of this movie.  The family cannot be too careful, they live in an abandon house out in the woods and have it boarded up except for one door that is the only way in and out. Most of the exciting thrilling scenes happen around this door being that its the place where most people end up getting sick.

Composed of better than normal acting and screenwriting this is what makes this movie bearable to watch, though it is expected finding out that it had nothing really els going for it. Most of the progression in the movie was slow and some parts even unnecessary or completely drawn out way longer than they needed to be. You might say after watching it that it has since of artsiness to it, being much different than other suspense/horrors movies tend to be.

The actors playing the main family did not look to be a good match for each other as it was difficult to tell if the son was really even related to the father. Both the father and the son were interesting characters. They acted and looked to be totally opposites. The son was probably the strangest of them all. He would have these strange dreams every night that would actually be the scariest parts of the movie, which was really disappointed. But on top of that he was a bit of a disturbed individual having to deal with so many people dyeing and his inner drive pushing him to find a women when there is none except one.

Many people talked about how the ending of this movie was really just not good. I didn’t quite think it was that far off from the rest of the movie and that it all pretty much was expected, being how boring the rest of it was. Yes, they could have done a better job in closing up this sad story but if you think about it, it does the job in pulling together and closing the whole theme of the thing.

My recommendation don’t be fooled by Rotten Tomatoes on this one, and listen to the fans instead. This movie gets a Five out of Ten

Frankenhooker (1990)

FRANKENHOOKER-3

Talk about a weird one. When I came across this film I felt like I finally found something worth watching.. well at least interesting in a weird since. The way this film was made from how it was filmed to how nutty and insane it is really put it at the top of my list of being one of the strangest more unique movies I have ever watch.

A scientist obsessed with his work spends most all his time working on his dark experiments. For his wife’s birthday the scientist invents her a birthday gift, being as dangerous as it looks unfortunately kills her in a freak accident. Torn up about his wife being slaughtered to pieces he becomes mad and begins to bring his dead wife back to life by using the body parts from dead hookers.

Most of this movie can be described as dark and horrific diminished by the addition of comedy in how absurd and ridicules the whole plot is along with the acting. I really thought that there would be more to this movie than there actually was but most of it had to do with finding out how insane the guy was, putting together his wife, as much of the movie focused on this.

There was a lot of time and detail into how he was to recreate his wife, which I thought was unique and could imagine watching this one on a spooky halloween night. The later half of the film really pick up on the comedy and by my opinion was more entertaining. Some of the best parts were watching him find out how he was going to kill the hookers and then watching his finished work have some demo errors.

Frankenhooker (1)

The scientist really plays an insane dude marked by his methods of coping and getting inspiration for his creation. He is as insane as he is smart in how the way he devises his plan to work out so nicely.. well for the most part.

A lot of parts of the movie do not make a lot of since and I am guessing there are a lot of mistakes in the filming as I caught a few scenes that did not quite add up. Along with that there were many things I questioned asking myself “does this even make since?” but I guess the movie was not trying to be logical.

The end of the movie was probably the best when you get to see his finished creation escape and make its way around town looking and acting absolutely hilarious. Its like he forgot to give it a brain. The Frankenhooker repeats scripts from past moments leading up to the death of the hookers and has one focus in mind, make money by being a hooker to get the next dose of drugs. Except she is basically like a zombi being robotic in movement and tweaking every five seconds. Her facial tweaks are the best, probably being the best acting in the whole movie, making me wonder how any body could make such faces.

frankenhooker2

The end of the movie is quite funny bringing pay back from Frankenhooker onto her creator. He is probably glad to be back alive but didn’t expect to look the way he does. Lets just say he is not at all that masculine but that is what his formula called for to recreate life.

What this movie really is a combination of is bad acting, bad directing, bad filming, with a hilarious story line. Its to bad they really couldn’t have done a better job in putting this movie together but I guess it reflects the mad scientists work. I had a hard time watching this movie with how cheap the effects were but it sort of added to the comedy. It was hard to tell what era the feel of this movie gave off being between the 80s and 90s but I feel like it gave off more of an 80s vibe. This movie would fit the perfect description of a cult classic and was worth the watch even though it basically sucked. Im giving this movie a Four out of Ten.

Krampus (2015)

Krampus-2015-after-credits-hq

Do you like scary movies that also can be something to find a little bit funny, well this one is just that. This one takes a cast of comedians and sticks them in a not so jolly story. Most horror movies would not take a cast of comedians to be apart of an unhappy ending but it actually worked out for this movie as the actors could really act and throw in a little dash of comedy on the side.

Having all the family over for christmas the family has difficulties getting along with one another leaving a bitter vibe in this house. Pushing one of the little boys over the edge the boy gives up on trying to bring his family together and ends up bringing a curse upon his house hold with the anti Santa Claus demon leading the show.

I never really thought this movie would be any good based on the previews seeing all these comedians in this scary movie and it being about and evil Santa Claus character but it actually wasn’t that bad when watching it. What captured my attention was the way they kept the watcher guessing for answers. Allot of the movie at first is filled with suspense as they are trying to figure out what is going on. The blizzard is also a nice touch as it makes it difficult to see what exactly is happening.

The movie is full of creepy monsters and a frightful setting that makes a perfect concoction for a scary movie. There is no mercy for any of these family members from the little children to the old people creating even a more fearful feeling. Krampus’s little minions make this movie that much better as they are just as evil and ruthless as can be. It sort of reminded me of a bunch of Chuckys or gremlins causing havoc. The way they created how Krampus to look as the monster is also quite good and when ever you get to catch a glimpse of his face that is one of the most scares faces I ever seen. I bet it would make an excellent halloween mask.

The funny parts of this film really do make the frighting parts easier to bare as they are mixed in together really well. The family’s dynamics is quite hilarious as most families in movies are but this movie does not fail in this area by any means. There was also a lot to poke fun at when your watching the family fight Krampus’s little minions. I thought the movie ended well with the Krampus acting like he would show pity but he is as evil as he can be. The ending was also great as it throws your mind for a spin in wondering what actually happened to the family. This movie is watchable but only something that you might want to watch on halloween and without the kids I might add. This movie receives a Six out of Ten.

Alien: Covenant

6c9dedc2-6b42-40ee-8df5-5f965063cb8c

So…. Michael Fasenberger is the main character in this film and WOW… I mean wow.  This film, is a quandary of horrible acting and inconceivable drudgery.  I could not wait until the rolling credits.  But i did like some of the darkness vibe and tone it gave off.  That made it somewhat cool and enjoyable but it still lacked some grit. Every single scene lack heart and it just feels like they are going through the motions.

Ridley Scott is the director of this film and you can see him reaching, trying to find his roots in the direction of this film, but i feel he falls short here.  Promethius, the pre sequel, was a decent film, certainly a better piece of work then this was.  The 1979 Alien will stand the test of time for when it came out, there really wasn’t anything like it.  It set people off into an adventure into a world of cutting edge SCFI that in my personal view, had surpassed Star Trek.  I really view Ridley as a legend, but its time to put this franchise to bed.

The acting was subpar, but Fasenberger was incredible as usual.  He has been good in most films thus far in his career, and even with this script that wasn’t designed for greatness, he makes it work.Danny McBride always plays the funny character but this is one of his more serious roles by a longshot!  I don’t like serious version of him at all. Lame.  Incredibly lame.  I mean, why cast him in this film?  It makes no sense to me.  He is not good at pulling off this type of acting and it really shows quite profoundly.  I just felt sorry for him honestly.

This movie is not worth the admission though.  If you are a diehard Alien fan and love Ridley, red box this one night in the near future when you are bored and have nothing to clll your time in a more productive fulfilling manner.

Cabin Fever (2016)

cabin-fever 1

Cabin Fever 2016 is a remake of Cabin Fever 2002, which means to me it should be betterIt should be better in the since that movies should become better over time as there is new technology, more knowledge and so forth on how to create a more scary feeling in the eyes of the viewer. I think they did a good job remaking Evil Dead as it was a lot more scarier than the previous one, but this movie seemed to not be any better, or the same, but in fact worse than the original.

Okay so it has been a while since I seen Cabin Fever 2002 But what I can remember of it was that it was scary and it did have good acting.. for the most part.  To make sure of my self I looked at the difference in ratings between the two versions and as confirmation to my memory it seems that the first version was a lot better.

This movie is about a group of young people that go on vacation to this cabin in the middle of the woods where there is a disease that causes there flesh to rot away. One after another they contract the disease no matter how hard they try not to catch it. They shun their friends that do have it but this even does not keep them from catching it. The situation is pretty much typical as in every scary movie. There is a group of about 5 people some are couples and some are singles. There is always the one weird guy of the bunch, The selfish guy who only cares about his own safety. and the rest are cheating couples. The local towns folk are always really weird and the vacationers always get the vibe from them like they are not suppose to be there and if they decide to stay they will probably die. And then there is the scary campfire story that is always told right before things start to get real. So basically what Im saying is there is nothing special about this setup.

Cabin fever 3

What did I not like about this movie, well pretty much everything. The acting was horrible. The flesh eating disease was not that disgusting. There was nothing scary about how they contracted it. It was really just a bunch of blood. The towns folk where probably the scariest part seeing how crazy they where. I never understood a lot of the characters. Like what was wrong with the butcher lady, The kid wearing the bunny mask, The sherif chick, and the strange weed smoking traveler out in the woods. They were really all very strange characters and I didn’t really understand their purpose other than to make the town super weird.

Even though I am still confused on what exactly this flesh eating disease really did to the people I think that I can conclude that it made people crazy, want to harm other people, and that it did not allow them to die very fast. I just think about the diseased dog and the sick man in the woods and how these decaying bodies are still alive and what the heck are they doing bothering these nice young people for. I got the since that maybe the town folk were in on it and wanted them to die in the woods but who knows, the director did not really do a good job of putting the pieces together.

Cabin fever 2

So this movie was just about as disappointing as ever, as I had really high hopes for it an all seeing how good the first one was. If you want to see a real good flesh eating disease movie, watch Contracted. Now that movie is sick. Also the most important think to take home from reading this review is, if you haven’t watched either of the two makes or have only watched the most recent 2016 remake, watch the 2002 version, it will be a better use of your time. This movie let me down, but I will be generous and give it a Four out of Ten just because I liked the old one.
