Sand Lot

The-Sandlot

This is the first see it again review I am doing. I don’t usually watch movies a second time but I watched this one at a pool party with a projector playing the movie on a giant sheet.  First time seeing the movie in this type of environment an as a lot older I might add.

I had forgotten a lot of the little extra scenes they added in there besides the ordeal with the Babe Ruth ball and the gnarly dog. There was actually more to the movie than what I could remember as well as being longer than I thought it was.

What cracked me up most was all the little silly names and words we use to use back in those days and what people thought was offensive to use in dissing matches. The characters were a hoot in reminding me just how it use to be back in the day as I would often take on much of what they did in say in my own childhood.

Some of the things I noticed in this that I had dent noticed before was the decade it was set in. I guess you really don’t pay attention to those types of things as a kid. All the extra talk that is in the background that actually makes a lot of since but the shot is focused on something completely different. How fake and big the dog looks right up until the chase scene.

Some actors in this movie that I didn’t quite pay attention to or know about at the time where in this movie that have really made it the acting business are Marley Shelton and Denis Leary. Marley Shelton has played in many of my favorite Movies including Planet Terror and Death Proof. Denis Leary you will probably know from the series Rescue Me and The Amazing Spider – Man. I Love it when you recognize actors from old films, don’t you? 🙂

The ending of this movie is quite sad and makes me depressed to even watch it again. This is probably one of the reasons I don’t choose to watch this movie. Who wants to be left feeling empty and alone as this movie will make you feel. Any ways it was decent and it brings back memories. This movie gets a Six out of Ten.

The Good Place (Season One)

The Good Place

The Good Place is a NBC premier that I found to watch on Hulu. At first glances seeing the cover you will get the impression of an easy going simple comedy, and that is exactly what it is. The whole Idea behind the show is actually quite clever and you would imagine that being about an after life concept that it would be pretty good. Well let’s just say my expectation were not quite matched to what I had anticipated.

Kristen Bell and Adam Scott are the only two recognizable actors that I noticed in this show. The show was made by the same crew who does Parks and Recreation, hence Adam Scott being apart of this cast. In know way does it come close to comparing to Parks and Rec though, which I had hopes for.

The show lasts typically less than 30 minutes and it is neither a documentary or sitcom. It is a show with a plot that will unfold slowly over the continued seasons. although the acting is not as good as it should be for a show like this with the cast and script doing as good of a job as your basic sitcom.

There are a lot of interesting and surprising things that happen through out most of the episodes that literally could be said to be the main chew of what makes the show survive.   The comedy is week and the potential to where this show will go with the plot it has is scarce. Most of the thrill and suspense has to do with the drama that is played out in the characters trying to find out why the good place is falling apart and how those who know why it is falling apart are going to fix it and keep the reason hidden.

There is much mystery and a thought for this show’s story to branch out to expanded bounds. The introduction of new characters would be a plus as the small circle of main players that are happening right has about met its final existence to what has currently happened. Viewers will be quite curious to see the next season of this show as the possibilities to where it can go form here are endless. Lets just hope that the second season out does the first. This show lands a hard Six out of Ten.

Casual (Season 1)

casual

This is a Hulu original that fits under the category of Comedy/Drama. It is really an interesting show that took me a while into the season to figure out what it was about and  that the title really speaks accurately about it. Being a pretty serious comedy serious I wasn’t sure I was going to like it that much but it held an aspect of psychology that captured my interest until I could finally start getting into it.

The show is about the three people you see in the photo above. There is the divorced mother who has not gotten over her ex husband moving on as fast as he did after the divorce. She is a psychologist/counselor that you will find out while watch has as many issues as a the clients she counsels and will often end up having her family and assistant giving her therapy. The mother has a daughter in the middle of the picture above who she basically lets do what ever she wants because of her psychological mind set. This allows them to have a close relationship witch overall is not that healthy and causes issues later down the road. After the divorce the mother and daughter move into the mothers brother’s house where he openly excepts them in. The mother and her brothers relationship is also very uncomfortably close making the three of them one interesting too casual of a family.

As you will come to figure out what this show is about is Sex! real causal Sex. you can tell when each episode starts the intro shows a list of preferences that one would choose on a dating site. Like looking for a relationship, just dating ext, and the one it lands on is casual. So the brother is only rich because he was a partner in creating this dating site called Snooger where the Brother basically has not contributed to the company since the beginning and now only uses the site to his own benefit of hooking up with what ever women he chooses. He can do this because he is a master at knowing what the perfect online dating profile looks like and what women tend to for when reading a fellows profile.

The sexual relationships between the family and the people they meet really make up the bulk of the entertainment in this show. They all end up treading on top of each others  territory being too non nonchalant with their boundaries and being the victim of bad parents. You get to meet their parents as they to eventually come into the show and you get to see all the destruction they did to their kids and there grandkid.

The show starts out real slow and continues to be slow but it is well made and the progression flows along smoothly as you start to see the different characters and their relationships come to be. Causal sort of reminds me of the show Weeds in being similar to sharing the qualities of having an unstructured family and a similar feel. Its definitely not much of a show to just jump in on on any episode having the since that you will need to watch this one from the begging if you are going to have any clue on what is happening. A lot conspires from episode to episode and this is another reason that this show is just decent enough to watch.

I have high hopes for the second season but am still debating on watching it or not because i believe that there are much better show out there to watch having found many! But it seams to be a popular pick upon Hulu watchers and should deserve the chance to even give the first season a full watch through. Like I said, after the first season I am more incline to continue watching. This show gets a Six out of Ten.

Coyote Ugly (2000)

coyote ugly

This has been a movie that has gotten a lot of talk about in my time. Every body seems to like Coyote Ugly. It is just one of those movies that this generation has sort of grew up with. Yet never being attracted to it before or even now I decided to give it a look’n at to see if it truly was worth all the hype.

Well It didn’t take long to see the big connection between the movie and my generation, which would be in the 20s and 30s age range. It just really hit the mark on being your typical 2000s movie. What makes this such a rememberable and well talked about movie was its feel to get you rooting for this girl thats just trying to make it on her own, that is the main character Piper Perabo, and the sexual appeal being cute but inappropriate to most conservatives. Not now of course, knowing what they show now on the media is way more sensual than ever before. But lets talk more about what this movie entails.

Being just another girl in New York trying to make it, Violet tries out at one of the more wilder bars in town. She needs the money and she is willing to do just about what ever it takes, besides showing to much skin if you get my drift. This is not an easy gig as Violet will have to step way out of her comfort zone if she is willing to keep the big money flowing in.

Most of the entertainment in this film is watching the Coyotes dance and do bar tricks on top of the bar. Of course you can see how this would be more fun if you were actually at this bar. But if you just drink with the rest of the crowd and watch the movie on a big enough TV it will be as good as if you were actually there. Other things to look forward to  are boyfriend drama, Daddy drama, and of course bar fights.

Personally I think Piper Perabo is way to sweet and innocent to play the character of Violet as she just does not look as sleazy as the other Coyotes. To be honest half the time I was scared for her that one of the guys at the bar were going to harass her, as close as they actually came to doing it. Its no wonder why her boyfriend and dad disapproved of her career.

So we got that the bar scenes where basically the best part of the movie right good thing this took up most of the screen time. Everything else about the movie pretty much made me want to die. The acting was so bad and the side drama with the two other men in her life just made me want to throw up. But for the record I think most movies that came out around this time pretty much all sucked.

John Goodman played a decent part being the girls father and all. I couldn’t really see how she would have been born from him but I guess you can pretty much make anything work in a movie if sucks already. his character fits the girls life just perfectly with Violet being his all in all and her being the daddies girl and trying to look out for pops best interest.

I can’t believe Im saying this but this movie is getting a Six out of Ten. Not because I liked it or thought it was any good but because it deserves some credit as being as popular as it is.

Permanent Midnight (1998)

Permanent_Midnight_06

Ben Stiller plays Jerry Stahl the key player in this film. 90 days out of rehab Jerry meets this women in a motel for a fun time. Based on his poor performance they get to talking about their past lives and then moving from just sex to sex and heroin. Jerry tells his story that night in the hotel room to kitty about his past drug addiction. Jerry is a writer and a pretty good one at that and he does the normal walk of life but the only difference is he gets caught up in drugs.

I would have to say this movie was pretty disturbing. I know it was a drug movie in all but I felt it got right down to the cold hard facts of what being addicted to hard core drugs can actually look like and do to a man and his life. The movie didn’t start out that messed up. Its hard to tell what the first drug is that they are doing in the movie but by comparing them to the other drugs as the movie went on, Im guessing it was the gateway drug weed or maybe it was crack hard to tell.

PermanentMidnight 4

At first it looks like Jerry is able to function and function pretty well on the heroin as he goes about his career and seems to get multiple opportunities for different gigs in his industry. He also becomes pretty good at hiding his drug use from his wife who I think is a little too forgiving of the fact that her husband as a heroin addict. His addiction to heroin really starts to become obvious when he has to shoot up whenever his last dose wears off or he becomes stressed. You get to see how he becomes more out of control and brain dead as his heroin addiction becomes worse. He can’t even carry on a conversation and half the people he knows or meets he either tries to score from in the most desperate ways.

Eventually Jerry switches one drug for another as he is pushed to get clean from the heroin to keep his new job. He checks himself in to rehab where the Doctor pretty much tells him how sick he is from his addiction. Jerry does not take his rehab that seriously since as soon as he walks out the doors of the clinic he is met by this god forsaken drug dealer who sells to people trying to get off drugs. This guy is real messed up as he get Jerry addicted to crack and pretty much sells him some all the time even though he wants to get off it knowing how jacked up the crack makes him. Some of the scenes with him on crack are pretty messed up as it show war this drug makes people do.

Most of the saddest parts of this movie involve Jerry running in to other people and how sick and disturbed Jerry looks to the outside world even though he can’t necessarily see it  himself being high all the time. But The people that he runs into just doing his normal life while on drugs would make a normal person feel so shameful and you really feel sorry that a guy like Jerry could drop so low. Toward the end Jerry eventually gets caught and sent to jail in the most sorrowful circumstance ever. Although your happy for the guy after seeing that he finally is going to get some help.

PM 3

This movie was hard to finish seeing how messed up drugs actually are in the hand of an addict. Most the time this movie just gave me bad feeling and made me sad and depressed. It even took me a while to stop thinking about it after it was over and the way it effected me lingered. I will never watch this again, not because it was a bad movie, but just because I like watching stuff that makes me have good feeling and not nightmares. This Movie gets a Six out of Ten.

War Dogs

war dogs

This was actually a pretty good movie and one that I would want to see again as I felt I missed some of the finer details. I was watching this a couple nights ago and didn’t get to finish it but I had to finish it up since it was such a good movie. This movie is about David Packouz who is played by Miles Teller and Efraim Diveroli played by Jonah Hill. Although the story is mainly about Miles Teller and how he moves from a message therapist too a national guns dealer to help support his new baby and get away from his last job that he hated.

Efraim Diveroli is bad news for David as he swings into town and gets David to work for him. Efraim looks really impressive to David with all the money he is making and his take no crap, do what ever he wants life style. What David doesn’t relies is what kind of crazy work he is about to get into and also what kind of guy his boss really is. Efraim will do any thing to land a deal even if it puts him and David in harms way or doing something illegal. On top of this David doesn’t find out till later that even his best friend is willing to lie and screw him over.

Running guns is and exciting and risky business as you can see from what these guys do and how they do it. They also come up with some very innovative and clever ways to get some of their transaction accomplished, which might even motivate you to come up with your own business idea. Basically the whole idea of the business they are in and how they end up making so much money off it is really ingenious. Like he say’s in the movie, Its a gold mine.

This movie was really comparable to The Wolves of Wall Street although it was not as good. Something about this movie just had me drawn in, I guess it might have been how fast these guys were moving up in the latter of social class. There is just something about watching people succeed and make a bunch of money that just really gets you pumped.

My favorite part about this movie was Jonah Hill. I always think he does a great job in all the parts that he plays and he did a great job in this movie too. It’s a combination of the crap he says and the stuff he does that just really never fail to surprise me and make me laugh. One specific think about Jonah Hill in this movie that really was the icing on top of the cake was his laugh. It was so horrible in a funny way and just how many times he would make that laugh every time it was just so funny. I don’t know if that is his real laugh because I never noticed really in his other movies. but then as I think back I have heard it before, I just think in this movie he really exaggerates it and makes it a real fun part of this film.

The Movie ends decently but it was nothing really special. Im just real happy for David and how he ends up. He really was a good guy and only wanted the best for his family. If any thing I think the movie ended kind of fast and there probably could have been more of a story on how it ended. But overall I really liked War Dogs and would recommend it if you are a fan of Jonah Hill or just like movies about under dogs rising to the top of the economic chain. This movie deserves a Eight out of Ten.

Black Mass (2015)

black mass

Black Mass tells the true story of Whitey Bulger a infamous criminal of south Boston. Whitey Bulger partners with the FBI to take down some other groups of gangsters that he also wants out of the picture for protection from the FBI. Sounds like a win win for Whitey. Well part of the deal was that he could not kill anybody and that he could not be dealing drugs. Well being a psycho like Whitey is this didn’t last long as he pretty much killed and did what ever other crime he wanted to. This must have been worth it to the FBI or at least some of the members as they where being promoted and getting raises for getting the best intel they ever had. Eventually Whitey starts to burn out as all his crew gets caught and decides to rat on him for a lesser sentence.

This movie started off great looking like a real gangster film comparable to the Departed one of my favorite films of all time. It even had a Matt Damon look alike in it, (Jesse Plemons) who even plays a similar character in this film as he did in the Departed. Although as the film goes on you definitely get the since that this is not going to be near as good as the Departed.

Jonny Depp plays an outstanding criminal as he is just a real bad man. You can see how psychotic he is by how many people he kills and the ways he does it, killing his crew and basically just any body who happens to strike the smallest of nerves in this man. He’s smart, he’s evil, and he’s powerful as he controls the FBI and everybody around him.

Probably the best part of this movie was all the violence and killings other than that there wasn’t really much left to offer. The end of the movie dwindles down explaining the fate of Whitely Bulger and his crew members as well as some of the FBI agents who get involved in cover up his tracks.

You should watch this movie if you’re really into Jonny Depp or have a thing for biographies. If I would have truly known what this movie was worth before I had watched it I probably wouldn’t have gave it the time. If your looking for a Boston gangster movie with FBI agents trying to take them down I would stick to The Departed. Black Mass gets a  Five out of Ten.
