About Parker’s Movie Reviews

This is the post excerpt.

Logan Theatre

I always thought it would be neat to be a movie critic. Sitting in the theater or at home on my comfy chair or couch drinking my favorite soda or beer I have watch countless movies and have always had great opinions and judgments on them. I would tell my friends and my family and even some stranger I just met who didn’t really want me to spoil a good movie that they where hoping to some day watch but those judgements and critiques would never be written down for others who truly cared to hear how great or how bad some film really was. Now this is my time to share with all of you who might care about what I have to say about a movie you plan to see or maybe have seen and you want to see if another person thinks the same as you about it when all your friends think other wise.

I am very picky about the movies I see these days and I hardly will ever go to the theater to watch one unless I have a hunch that it will actually be good or els my girlfriend wants me to go see it with her. Frankly with all the movies I have seen in my life time there are few and far between that are actually worth watching. But every now and again one catches my eye as I am sporadically flipping through the channels measuring my options on what I should watch right before it gets to the point where it is to late to start watching the one movie I had in mind because now its to far into it and I would dare not try watching it with out knowing what happened in the begging… I know I sound old fashion. Your probably thinking doesn’t this dude have Netflix or Direct TV? I do or use to or it just doesn’t work any more and I haven’t took the time or spend the money to upgrade my merchandise because I  believe there are better things to do than spend all your time and money on TV, and movies. Like writing this blog for instance, This is way cooler than wasting your life away watching other people have amazing and fun adventures.

As you will come to notice if you choose to read my movie reviews Im comedy guy. So don’t get upset if you don’t see something on our favorite drama or your some unrealistic action film your all hyped up about. Not saying I won’t write on these categories either, Im just saying you will probably see a lot more Comedies. Okay, that about raps it up for what this blog post is all about. Hope you enjoy, If not, I will still have a good.

The Cold Dish: The First Novel In The Longmire Mystery Series (Book Review)

9780143036425_ColdDish_CVF.indd

Mark: This book looked like a good one from the Barnes and Nobles and i knew it would have potential. The story unfolds with Walter Longmire, the sheriff of a small town in Wyoming.  I love Wyoming after visiting there so this made the story even better for me. Walter is hilarious to me, but also i feel sympathy for him, as he doesn’t have any family around and has been through some dark times.  He does have a good friend in Henry, a bar owner and indian in the town.   There are many other diverse characters as well as some that made you scratch your head.

Parker: I agree, the scenery depicted and the towns talked about paint a beautiful picture of the WY country side and small town life. In the beginning you are a little fuzzy on what the layout is and the ground to be covered in this book but as the story unfolds get a clear picture in your mind of setting the story is placed in. The towns and where they are at become real to you as if you were taking along with LongMire himself.

The book really didn’t catch my interest at first it was slow to start out and it really didn’t start to get interesting infill about page 120. But as the story progresses it gets more and more interesting leaving you with exciting cliff hangers at the end of every chapter.

Mark: I really like the dynamic between Vic the deputy and Walter.  She really is a firecracker she says whatever she wants and does whatever she wants. Walter really doesn’t know how to handle her and her style. As the story progressed i felt like Henry was the killer.  The story in the background is about four young men who did something mean to Melissa, an Indian back when they were in high school. Cody, George, Keller, and Jacob.  These young men play a vital part in this story throughout, so pay close attention readers.

Parker: The mystery was hard to solve but I am glad because the clues were always leading to a bigger more complex case. You can see the excitement in the characters when ever they get a new lead that re-vitalizes the cold dish. One thing I really appreciated about this book was the break of comedy it added to make the intermittent scenes fun and relaxing. Then there was all of the women that wear starving over Longmire, he basically had the whole woman population in his district of WY courting him. Remarkably he is a classy man and would never take advantage of a women, though that is hard to say about the women drooling over him.

Mark: In closing, let me just say that this book is not by any means a short read.  It took me a month.  400 pages, so not Lord of the Rings or anything that daunting. Midway through, you will become very engaged in the book and will have trouble setting it down.  It gets to be quite exhilarating and you will have to pay close attention to the details.  I did not like the first half, but the last half really was much better.  The characters are strong, and the author really puts his insights into it and you can feel him driving the narrative in the direction he wants it to go, which is quite a gift.  Put down the iPhone and read this and get lost in the story! I give this book a Six out of Ten.

Parker: Well it is my first book to read that is a series and is also a TV series. I can’t wait to see how this is going to play out on Netflix. So many firsts. ‘tears’.. This book gets a Seven out of Ten.

Sand Lot

The-Sandlot

This is the first see it again review I am doing. I don’t usually watch movies a second time but I watched this one at a pool party with a projector playing the movie on a giant sheet.  First time seeing the movie in this type of environment an as a lot older I might add.

I had forgotten a lot of the little extra scenes they added in there besides the ordeal with the Babe Ruth ball and the gnarly dog. There was actually more to the movie than what I could remember as well as being longer than I thought it was.

What cracked me up most was all the little silly names and words we use to use back in those days and what people thought was offensive to use in dissing matches. The characters were a hoot in reminding me just how it use to be back in the day as I would often take on much of what they did in say in my own childhood.

Some of the things I noticed in this that I had dent noticed before was the decade it was set in. I guess you really don’t pay attention to those types of things as a kid. All the extra talk that is in the background that actually makes a lot of since but the shot is focused on something completely different. How fake and big the dog looks right up until the chase scene.

Some actors in this movie that I didn’t quite pay attention to or know about at the time where in this movie that have really made it the acting business are Marley Shelton and Denis Leary. Marley Shelton has played in many of my favorite Movies including Planet Terror and Death Proof. Denis Leary you will probably know from the series Rescue Me and The Amazing Spider – Man. I Love it when you recognize actors from old films, don’t you? 🙂

The ending of this movie is quite sad and makes me depressed to even watch it again. This is probably one of the reasons I don’t choose to watch this movie. Who wants to be left feeling empty and alone as this movie will make you feel. Any ways it was decent and it brings back memories. This movie gets a Six out of Ten.

Rogue One

rogue one

The anticipation to see this movie was exhilarating being that it had been the only Star Wars film that I had yet to see. Also that I would be watching it at an outdoor theater sitting in the grass under the night sky. Unfortunately the lightning bugs and the kids swirling and tossing glow sticks was more of light show than I ended up getting from this moderate to disappointing side story.

At first I didn’t know it was a side story or that it would be missing most all the characters we love about the Star Wars series. But about 45 minutes in, it became obvious that this wasn’t your typical Star Wars movie.

The beginning was hard to follow and I didn’t understand where the characters came from and what they were trying to accomplish, besides the main goal of stoping the Death Star . There was no beginning rolling story introduction giving us the gist of the plot or the usual introduction music that every body knows and loves. I mean did they really have to do away with all the unique parts that make Star Wars what it is.

Never the less of not using the original characters, the characters were good. There is Jyn who plays the lead character, the brave hero who can hold her own and wants to save the galaxy. Cassian, her main companion and partner in the mission; not surprisingly they end up having feeling for one another. And another one of my favorites Chirrut, who is very funny. He plays the blind old man who believes that he has the force and fights along side them blind as bat. Then there is the Robot K-2SO, without him this movie would lose a lot of its personality. I think he ranks top on the Star Wars Robots thus far.

The progression of the movie was fine and flowed nicely but it did not have me drawn in to where I was afraid I was going to miss something worth seeing. Especially the whole first half there was just not much going, and I was starting to wonder is this really what Star Wars has become. Thankfully during the last half of the film things had gotten good.

Okay so this is my biggest hang up with this movie, there are absolutely no light sabers or Jetties. Well not absolutely but it seems that way till the very very end and even at that, 20 seconds of light saber time just does not cut it. I don’t know about you, but the whole reason I watch Star Wars is to see the Jetties wield those awesome glowing swords around and use the force to pretty much do what ever they want. This was a big no no. I don’t care if they quoted in the film or not ” There are no Jetties left” or something to that extent.

This movie has a pretty good ending and there are some surprise guests from a few of the characters we remember from Episode IV. Princes Leia’s brief appearance actually fooled me as I thought they got a double for a sec. I said “dang she looks just like her”. Right then I was told that it was cropped in from a previous Star Wars film.

I would not really call this a side story but rather Star Wars Episode 3 1/2, being proper fit in the sequence of events. Even though the movie had a rocky start, it ended well with a similar ending to another Episode which was smooth!  Score… I’m thinking about a Six out of Ten.

Wonder Woman (2017)

WW

Let me start off by saying that I had no expectations going into this film. You see I am not a super hero movie type of guy. They are far and few between. The last good one I saw was Batman The Dark Knight. Now that was back in 2008, so as you can see I sort of gave up on this genre a long time ago. You might say Super hero movies are a brand of movie that has now just taken off in popularity in the past decade or so. Leaving the film industry with a lot of new material to work off of. Making it an exciting and fresh new genre for movie watchers and especially for the large population of comic book fans that happen to be out there. So you might ask, why this movie? what made me want to watch this one? Well it did get tons of hype for one thing and secondly some friends of mine who have already seen it in theaters more times than I would ever deem a movie worthy of watching talked  me into going. So here I am, and my experience was worth every penny, even though I only paid $4.50. Score!!

At first I wanted to say this movie had a rocky start. I really had to hold my self back from laughing and I chuckled through the first 15 minutes or so. It might have been something to do with all the women and how feminist like they were. Besides that, the little special island all the women fighters were on was pretty cool and I really appreciated how beautiful it looked.

I guess they really didn’t expect for man kind to have such deadly weapons because they literally were no match for the germans with there archaic weaponry. And I didn’t under stand why they would lie so much to Wonder Women unless partially it was just them being as ignorant as I began to notice they were.

Anyways the the movie started to pick up when Wonder Women and Steve, the guy she goes out to save the world with, begin their mission. Most of the comedy can be summed up in Diana/ Wonder Women being ignorant of how the real world works. This act carries a long way and never gets old which had me laughing my butt off.

You don’t really know what sort of powers Wonder Women holds in the begging of the movie. They did a good job in revealing her powers by little bits at a time allowing you not to get board but super excited to see how she was going to conquer the next challenge. Her character is also heart warming which makes you want to root for her. She has a spirit to do good no matter who or what gets in her way and she shows no partiality.

The movie really takes you on a whirlwind of emotions as there is some loss and some victories, joy, love, brotherhood, pain and suffering. The progression of the movie was perfect and there was not time for a dull moment to miss any part of this film. The mystery in wondering if there truly is an Eras god of war who is causing all the evil leaves the watcher wondering how this movie will all end. The ending is quite good as you do not see it coming.

I am happy to say this movie gets the highest score I have yet to give on a movie on my review blog. This one took me by surprise and I would mention that I do not give out scores higher than eights that often but this one deserves it. Wonder Women gets a Nine out of Ten.

The Good Place (Season One)

The Good Place

The Good Place is a NBC premier that I found to watch on Hulu. At first glances seeing the cover you will get the impression of an easy going simple comedy, and that is exactly what it is. The whole Idea behind the show is actually quite clever and you would imagine that being about an after life concept that it would be pretty good. Well let’s just say my expectation were not quite matched to what I had anticipated.

Kristen Bell and Adam Scott are the only two recognizable actors that I noticed in this show. The show was made by the same crew who does Parks and Recreation, hence Adam Scott being apart of this cast. In know way does it come close to comparing to Parks and Rec though, which I had hopes for.

The show lasts typically less than 30 minutes and it is neither a documentary or sitcom. It is a show with a plot that will unfold slowly over the continued seasons. although the acting is not as good as it should be for a show like this with the cast and script doing as good of a job as your basic sitcom.

There are a lot of interesting and surprising things that happen through out most of the episodes that literally could be said to be the main chew of what makes the show survive.   The comedy is week and the potential to where this show will go with the plot it has is scarce. Most of the thrill and suspense has to do with the drama that is played out in the characters trying to find out why the good place is falling apart and how those who know why it is falling apart are going to fix it and keep the reason hidden.

There is much mystery and a thought for this show’s story to branch out to expanded bounds. The introduction of new characters would be a plus as the small circle of main players that are happening right has about met its final existence to what has currently happened. Viewers will be quite curious to see the next season of this show as the possibilities to where it can go form here are endless. Lets just hope that the second season out does the first. This show lands a hard Six out of Ten.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

lsof

A remake of the 1960s movie. This is a comical musical that turns what could be a horror film into a film filled with fun songs and plenty of laughs and feelings of happiness. Still based in the 1960s of the poor streets of skid row, this movie tells the story of a botinist and a shop assistant trying to find love in one another. Of course there is the alien man eating plant that brings them together. The plant is the other half of what this play is about. With these two factors coming together we get a sweet and fun dynamic for a theater production.

This is one Musical I could not stop myself from singing along with as the songs were so catchy and lively they really contributed to making this film complete in making the watcher have good feelings. The songs where funny and added a richness of color and pizzazz to the overall picture with dashes of raunchiness and sadistic lyrics to match the overall feeling. The sound track even tells the story so well that after you have seen the movie you can listen to the sound track alone and hear the whole story as if you where watching it. I only know this because i have the sound track playing right now as I’m typing this because I though it would be fun and plus I really liked the main song and couldn’t get it out of my head.

The cast is a great pic for this film as it includes Rick Moranis, Ellen Green, Steve Martin, Jim Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest, and Bill Murray. Ellen Green’s voice and her ability to show cleavage make her a hurrah as you watch this tall yet tiny voice of a women, Audrey the shop assistant. Rick Moranis as always plays the perfect nerd/scientist so no doubt he is going to play a great botanist. Steven Martin is the other big hitter and by my opinion plays the best role as he is absolutely hilarious. I would have had to say this is one of his best works. The other special guests stars include Bill Murray, John Candy, and Christopher Guest who have little great one sceners in this film but by far I would have to say that Bill Murray was priceless, real raw Murray.

You will find Steve Martin playing the character of Orin the Dentist and he is one of my favorite parts of the film. An evil dentist at that, that looks and talks like Elvis Precisely met John Travolta from Grease. He loves to inflict pain on his patients as well as treat his girlfriend Audrey unacceptably bad. With out Orin this movie would not be the same.

The set this movie was filmed on and the setup also really impressed me. It gave it a real live theater type feel. The three singing girls also played an important part in making this movie how great it was. The voice of the plant I believe was a great choice as well giving the plant the power it deserved but the joke that you couldn’t take it seriously. The timing of the movie was on point and the story was simple moving along at a steady pace.

There really wasn’t much to the whole thing but there didn’t have to be, the story was about the script and how it was acted upon. One thing that I really did appreciate was how they did not over do it with the musical pieces. This movie had just the right amount of singing and all the words of the songs played perfectly into the detail of the story line. The only thing truly I did not like is that the play couldn’t keep the same level of excitement in the entertainment as it happened to fade out toward the end.

The way they filmed this movie was excellent with many fun and unordinary shots giving it an unique and entertaining style. I give the director (Frank Oz) props for his work and would say it was comparable to Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is a must see for all those who appreciate good movie work and a top on my list for musicals/plays . This movie gets an Eight out of Ten.

Casual (Season 1)

casual

This is a Hulu original that fits under the category of Comedy/Drama. It is really an interesting show that took me a while into the season to figure out what it was about and  that the title really speaks accurately about it. Being a pretty serious comedy serious I wasn’t sure I was going to like it that much but it held an aspect of psychology that captured my interest until I could finally start getting into it.

The show is about the three people you see in the photo above. There is the divorced mother who has not gotten over her ex husband moving on as fast as he did after the divorce. She is a psychologist/counselor that you will find out while watch has as many issues as a the clients she counsels and will often end up having her family and assistant giving her therapy. The mother has a daughter in the middle of the picture above who she basically lets do what ever she wants because of her psychological mind set. This allows them to have a close relationship witch overall is not that healthy and causes issues later down the road. After the divorce the mother and daughter move into the mothers brother’s house where he openly excepts them in. The mother and her brothers relationship is also very uncomfortably close making the three of them one interesting too casual of a family.

As you will come to figure out what this show is about is Sex! real causal Sex. you can tell when each episode starts the intro shows a list of preferences that one would choose on a dating site. Like looking for a relationship, just dating ext, and the one it lands on is casual. So the brother is only rich because he was a partner in creating this dating site called Snooger where the Brother basically has not contributed to the company since the beginning and now only uses the site to his own benefit of hooking up with what ever women he chooses. He can do this because he is a master at knowing what the perfect online dating profile looks like and what women tend to for when reading a fellows profile.

The sexual relationships between the family and the people they meet really make up the bulk of the entertainment in this show. They all end up treading on top of each others  territory being too non nonchalant with their boundaries and being the victim of bad parents. You get to meet their parents as they to eventually come into the show and you get to see all the destruction they did to their kids and there grandkid.

The show starts out real slow and continues to be slow but it is well made and the progression flows along smoothly as you start to see the different characters and their relationships come to be. Causal sort of reminds me of the show Weeds in being similar to sharing the qualities of having an unstructured family and a similar feel. Its definitely not much of a show to just jump in on on any episode having the since that you will need to watch this one from the begging if you are going to have any clue on what is happening. A lot conspires from episode to episode and this is another reason that this show is just decent enough to watch.

I have high hopes for the second season but am still debating on watching it or not because i believe that there are much better show out there to watch having found many! But it seams to be a popular pick upon Hulu watchers and should deserve the chance to even give the first season a full watch through. Like I said, after the first season I am more incline to continue watching. This show gets a Six out of Ten.
